These are two of three animation series that I have been working on for Dribbble, mainly to teach myself and not forget about animation techniques. In this entry, I wanted to list a few simple functions that I used in After Effects. With only a few clicks, you can open up a lot of creative possibilities.

Trim Paths: animate a line

Trim Paths is a useful method to animate and change the length of a line You can control where a line should start and end at each given time period simply with percentage values. Here is how to use it.

  1. Create a new Shape Layer and draw a line.
  2. Click Add in the timeline next to the Content, find the Trim Paths option from the drop-down menu.
  3. Keyframe different Start and End values of the line. For example, if you set Start 20% and End 70%, the line is 50% of the total length that starts from 20% from where the original line starts from.
